DYHA COACH BIOS 2020/2021 SEASON
Peter Alfano is a product of West Haven, CT where he played youth travel hockey in the local program. He played three years of varsity hockey for Notre Dame-West Haven and then played at Canisius College. He has worked as a goaltending instructor for All-East Goaltending School, West Haven Youth Hockey, Connecticut Riverhawks, and DYHA. Peter has been a USA Hockey Official for 27 years including 10 years at the High School and collegiate (ECAC) level.
Victor Baryshevtsev is a pioneer of Russian hockey skating techniques and brings his skills and skating development plan to the DYHA. Victor was an Alternate on the 1988 USSR Olympic Hockey Team and is the founder of Victory on Ice, a unique hockey training program. He has worked with numerous Olympic skaters and NHL players including NHL players Max Pacioretty (Montreal Canadians), Artem Anisimov (Chicago Blackhawks) and Matt Moulson (New York Islanders, Buffalo Sabres).
Corey Badeau is a Rhode Island native who was a four-year varsity hockey player at Woonsocket High School where he was named All-State Defenseman in his junior and senior years. He was a recipient of the Hobey Baker Award in 2010 as the team’s captain. After High School Corey went on to play 4 years of club hockey at Sacred Heart University where he won two NECHA Conference Championships in 2013 and 2014. Corey started his coaching career at the Fairfield Ice Academy where he spent 2 years giving private lessons, running multiple clinics that specialized in basic fundamentals, power skating, and stickhandling. At Chelsea Piers Connecticut, Corey become the Adult Hockey Coordinator where he managed the rinks adult hockey programs, coached the Mite Development program, Learn to Play program and 6:1 hockey program. Corey has coached PeeWee and Bantam hockey with the Darien Youth Hockey Association over the past three years as well as Darien High School’s JV hockey program since the 2017-2018 season.
Josh Branchflower grew up in Oakville, Ontario and is a product of the Canadian youth hockey system. He moved to the US as a teenager and played two years of high school hockey in Newtown where he still holds the records for most goals by a freshman and was named Assistant Captain his Sophomore year. He started his Juniors career with the Brewster Bulldogs and the Connecticut Wolfpack before heading back to Canada to play Junior A for 3 years. He returned to the US again and began his coaching career with the Western Colonials Peewee A, the Mid-Fairfield Stars and has done Mites through Bantams with DYHA.
Michael Carlucci grew up playing “A” level travel hockey for 8 years where he won 6 CHC state titles and 2 New England Regional Championships. He played on Team Connecticut, 4 years of Trinity Catholic Varsity Hockey, earning 2 State Championships and 1 State title, followed by 2 years of University of Connecticut Club hockey. Mike’s extensive coaching career includes the Greenwich Blues, Trinity Catholic High School, the New England Generals, and the New Canaan Winter Club. Mike has also been Hockey Director for the Rinks at Shelton and SoNo Ice House and Travel Hockey Coordinator for the Fairfield Ice Academy.
Mike Cioffi brings 23 years of coaching experience to the DYHA Bantam A team. A USA Hockey Level 4 certified coach, Mike’s Bantam teams have won multiple state championships, including the 2019 CHC Tier 2 title, as well as several New England Regional tournaments and competed in the Tier II National Championships in 2006 and 2009. As an Assistant Coach for the Darien High School team Mike has helped DHS win multiple FCIAC titles and two CIAC Division I Championships in 2015 and 2016.
John Fahey Jr. joined DYHA from the Norwalk Roughriders where he was most recently coaching in the PeeWee ranks. He has been a youth travel coach for the past seven years, including stints at Greenwich and CPCT, with teams ranging from Mites to Bantams. John grew up in the Stamford Sharks program and played 3 years for Stamford High School where he was Captain his senior year. John’s specialty is developing young players skills and passion for the game of hockey. John is a USA Hockey Level 5 certified coach.
Nick Downing joined DYHA in the 2019/2020 season where during his time as interim head coach for Squirt AA he went undefeated for 11 games. Prior to DYHA, Nick was the Special Hockey Coach for Southern CT Storm as well as the Fairfield Prep Junior Varsity Assistant Coach. Nick grew up as a player in the Mid Fairfield organization from Mites through Bantams where he played on teams that won 3 State Titles and 1 Regional Championship. He was chosen by the Peewee Rangers, Boston Junior Bruins and East Coast Selects New England to play in their Select/International Select Tournaments. He attended Fairfield Prep where he played 4 years on the Varsity team winning 2 State Titles and showcasing his defensive talents with 0 goals against in all playoff games all 4 years. As a Midget, he played for Team Doritos where they went to the National Tier 2 Tournament. Nick still laces up his skates to play for the Chelsea Piers Men's League.
Brett Farson grew up in Greenwich and spent 12 travel seasons with the Greenwich Skating Club and Greenwich Blues programs. He played at Greenwich High School, Andover and Amherst College before serving as Head Coach for Brunswick Middle School, Greenwich HS Girls Varsity, King School Varsity (2016 FAA Champions), and his current position at Rye Country Day School where his team captured the FAA league title in 2017 and 2018. Brett founded and coached the Connecticut Nordiques spring program for seven years, now works with the CT Breakers and is a USA Hockey Level 4 certified coach. Over the years his former players have moved on to join college club teams at Cal-Berkeley, Duke, and Ohio State, and varsity teams at Amherst, Bowdoin, Dartmouth, Harvard, Michigan, Middlebury, Quinnipiac, RIT and Yale. Brett lives in Stamford with his wife Annie and three daughters Jaquelyn, Melanie and Abigail.
Chris Furtak grew up in Fairfield County, played youth hockey for New Milford Youth Hockey, attended New Fairfield - Immaculate and went on to play Varsity hockey for Manhattanville College before transferring to the University of Connecticut. Following graduation, he attained his master’s in history-Education from UConn, and made hockey his career, working for Blueline Sports. He spent four years as an Assistant Coach for New Canaan High School and has coached the Squirt A1 team in the DYHA for the past three years. Chris is a USA Hockey Level 3 certified coach.
Andrew Furtak learned to skate at Darien Ice Rink under the tutelage of Jamie Tropsa and Al Gurney and their Blueline Hockey Academy. His youth career was spent with New Milford Youth Hockey and Western Youth Hockey. Andrew played high school hockey for New Milford/Immaculate and ACHA club hockey for Western Connecticut State University.
Greg Furtak played his youth hockey with New Milford Youth Hockey and high school hockey at New Fairfield/Immaculate High School where he served as captain his Senior year. Greg played ACHA club hockey at Eastern Connecticut State University.
Pat Gore returns for his 17th year coaching with the DYHA, his 5th as Pee Wee AA Head Coach. Pat grew up playing for the DYHA wining multiple state and regional championships with his 1998 Squirt A team the first DYHA team to win both CT & New England Tier 1 championships in the same season. Pat played for Fairfield Prep at which time he also started his coaching career with Mites & Squirts. He joined the Darien High School staff as the JV Head Coach & Varsity assistant coach in 2007. From 2010-2017, he coached at New Canaan High School, spending 4 years as the Associate Head Coach and 3 seasons as the Head Coach. He returned to DHS as an Assistant Coach in 2017-2018. In his 11 years at NCHS & DHS, he has won 4 FCIAC championships, made 4 CIAC Division I final four appearances, and has had the pleasure of coaching many players who have continued to NCAA Division 1 and 3 levels. As a coach for DYHA, Pat has won 2 state championships at the Pee Wee & Bantam level and is a USA Hockey Level 4 certified coach.
Andrew Gore has been a coach with DYHA at the PeeWee AA for the past four seasons. Andrew grew up playing at DYHA where his PW A team won both the state and regional championships. Andrew was a four-year varsity letter winner at St. Joseph High School serving as Captain his Senior year and was awarded the Hobey Baker Award. He was named 1st Team All County (FCIAC), 1st Team All State (CIAC), 1st Team MSG Varsity Metropolitan Area as well as MVP of the CT High School All Star Game. Andrew attended Nichols College where he was a Club Hockey member for four years, serving as Asst. Captain his Junior and Senior years.
Chris Gragnano grew up playing hockey in Hazlet, New Jersey. He played high school at Christian Brothers Academy, where in his senior year he was named team captain and was also named to the All-County and All-State teams. Upon graduation he went to Providence College. After some time with the Friars he went on to Vermont where he joined the Green Mountain Glades of the EJHL. Upon graduation Chris moved to Connecticut and began his coaching career. Since 2007 he has coached many nationally ranked youth teams, has won Regional championships and brought teams to the USA Hockey National tournament. In 2015, Chris was hired as an assistant coach at the Gunnery and in his time there they have won an Elite 8 New England Championship ('16), the Watkins Tournament ('16) and the Avon Christmas Classic ('17). Chris has been a skills instructor in the area over the last 10 years and trains many high-level players from prep schools, junior programs and colleges as well as professionals that play in Europe, ECHL, AHL and the NHL.
Paul Hammer grew up in Minnesota and earned All-State and All-American honors playing for Aurora Hoyt Lakes High School. He was a 4-year letter winner at Boston College where his 1978 team was a Finalist in the NCAA Division I National Championship before playing professionally in Europe for a year. He has been involved in coaching with the DYHA since 1996 and has a USA Hockey Level 4 coaching certification.
Andrew (AJ) James played his youth hockey at Mid-Fairfield from Squirts through Midgets earning a trip to three USA Hockey National Tournaments. He played for Trinity Catholic High School for a year before attending Trinity Pawling where he played varsity hockey and lacrosse. AJ pursued lacrosse in college at Clark University where he played for four years. AJ has been helping teach hockey at STR since he was sixteen and has worked with DYHA for the past three years in the House program and with Bantam AA. AJ is currently pursuing a degree in Architecture at CUNY.
Jeremy Langlois is a native of Arizona where his early days were spent playing roller hockey. Transitioning to the ice, Jeremy played Junior hockey for the New Jersey Hitmen where he was named Eastern Junior Hockey League Offensive Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player after finishing the year as the league’s leading scorer. He went on to play four years at Quinnipiac University where he was named the team’s Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player as a sophomore, led the team in goals scored both sophomore and junior years and total points his senior year. Jeremy was named 3rd Team All-ECAC Hockey his Senior year when he led Quinnipiac to the NCAA Division 1 Championship title game. Post college, Jeremy was named to the ECHL Rookie team in 2014 and spent 5 seasons in the AHL scoring over 50 goals.
Kyle MacDonald is a native of Hanover, MA where he was a Boston Herald Goalie of the Year and three-time Catholic Conference All-Star playing at Xaverian Brothers High School. He attended St. Lawrence University, graduating in 2016, where he was a four-year member of the Skating Saints hockey team earning ECAC All-Academic honors two seasons. Kyle is currently the Assistant Athletic Director at Darien High School after spending time as the goaltending/assistant coach for both the men's and women's Division 1 hockey teams at Penn State University. Kyle has been active with USA Hockey where he has been a speaker at several Level 1, 2 and 3 clinics on goaltender development and goaltender practice planning.
Pat Maldonado has been involved in the DYHA program helping instruct at the Mini, Mighty, Mite and Squirt House levels over the past several years. This past season Pat led the Squirt B team to a CHC Tier 4 state title. Pat grew up playing in the Stamford Youth Hockey program and played for Stamford Catholic High School. He is a USA Hockey Level 2 certified coach and has two kids in the DYHA program, Ella and Lucas.
Rosario Mallozzi played his Youth Hockey at Mid Fairfield, was a four-year letterman at Stamford High School and played two years of Junior hockey under the direction of Marty and Perry Roos. Rosario has coached at all age levels at organizations such as Mid Fairfield, CT Yankees, Stamford Youth Hockey and most recently with the CT Jr. Whalers in the PeeWee age group. He has also served in Assistant Coach roles with Stamford High School and Trinity Catholic High School. He has won multiple state, regional and Silver Stick championships and has been a Level 5 USA Hockey Coach since 2007.
Bob Mazzone has been a DYHA coach since 1994 and led the DYHA’s mini-mite program from 1995 – 2005. He has also served as Head or Assistant Coach on several mite, squirt and Ice Cats teams. More recently, Bob has been a coach at both the Mite and Squirt levels and has led multiple teams to CHC state titles. Bob was a Captain and earned All-League honors at Wakefield High School before playing a PG year at Phillips Andover Academy. He played four years of JV Hockey at Harvard, serving as Captain his senior year. Bob is a USA Hockey Level 4 certified coach.
John Miserendino has spent the last 10 years as a power skating and skills instructor and is the current head coach of the Wilton High School boys’ varsity team. John has a USA Hockey Level 4 coaching certification, has served as Director of Youth Hockey at the Sono Ice House as well as a coach for the Norwalk Roughriders at the 18U, 14U and 12U levels.
Chris Nelson joined DYHA for the 2019/2020 season after having been a Head Coach in the CT Riverhawks organization for the prior five years, primarily in the PeeWee age group. He has also been the lead on-ice instructor for Shelton’s Development League focused on skating and stick skills as well as basic hockey systems for Mites through Bantams. Chris has been an Assistant Coach at St. Joseph’s High School where he is responsible for the defense, systems and special teams. He grew up as a player in the Mid Fairfield organization from Squirts through Bantams where he played on teams that won state, regional and national championships as well as the first team from New England to win the SilverSticks International hockey tournament at the AAA level. As a freshman, he played for Norwalk High School and earned All-FCIAC Honorable Mention. Opting not to return to high school hockey, Chris played Midgets for Mid-Fairfield. After an injury, Chris decided to pursue his other passion, music and the drums, and graduated from the Berklee College of Music.
Buzz Olson began coaching at the DYHA in the 2009/2010 season and currently serves as Head Coach of the PW A team and Assistant Coach on the DYHA Midget Minor White team. Buzz is also the Co-Head coach of the St. Luke’s School Varsity Hockey team. He has been USA Hockey Level 4 certified since 1995. Buzz was a three-year varsity starter at Phillips Academy in Andover MA and a member of the Harvard Freshman and Junior Varsity teams. He was a three-time Colorado State Speed Skating champion. His youth hockey coaching career began in 1983 with Mid Fairfield and he has since coached a total of 36 teams at all age levels in 6 different organizations including the Bay State Breakers (EHF, 7 seasons), Massachusetts Hockey Select League (2 seasons), Hingham Youth Hockey (8 seasons) and Stamford Youth Hockey, 1 season). He learned hockey from coaches like Tony Frasca (Colorado College All American, Head Coach), Bob Johnson (Head Coach, Colorado College, University of Wisconsin, 1976 US Olympic team, Calgary Flames and Pittsburg Penguins) and Tim Taylor (Harvard Freshman Coach, Yale University Head Coach).
John O’Neil is a product of Ithaca, NY, and Greenwich, CT, a USA Hockey Level 4 certified coach and former Level 4 official. He spent 2 years coaching in the Greenwich Jr. Hockey League as well as 1 year assisting Laura Stamm power skating, 5 years with the Winnetka, IL youth program and 2 years with Minneapolis Youth Hockey. Since returning to Darien in ‘91, he spent 5 years as a head coach with the Darien Sr. House program and 2 years with Rising Stars and since 2001 has been a Head or Assistant coach from Mites to Midgets in DYHA with a brief pause from 2011-14. John has been the Assistant PW A coach since 2015 while also serving as the Assistant Varsity coach at St. Luke’s School in New Canaan.
William “Billy” Santora is a Stamford native whose youth hockey experiences included playing for the Mid-Fairfield Blues (State Champions), Stamford Sharks, New England Nighthawks, and the CT Yankees. Billy played four years of high school hockey at Stamford High School where he was named Captain and earned All-State honors as a defenseman. Since graduating from the University of New Hampshire in 2018, Billy has coached for the Stamford Sharks and the CT Jr. Whalers at the Bantam and Peewee levels, respectively. He credits his passion for teaching hockey to the coaches he played for when growing up including Rosario Mallozzi, Clark Jones, Dave LoPresti and Eric Lind. Billy holds a Level 2 USA Hockey Coaching Certification and will gain his Level 3 over the course of the 2020-21 season. When not on the ice, Billy enjoys playing golf and fishing the Long Island Sound.
Darius Souza is a Rhode Island native who grew up playing for the Providence Capitals. He played two years for LaSalle Academy before playing U16 and U18 in the USPHL for the South Shore Kings. Darius is a four-year member of the ACHA Division II Sacred Heart hockey team.
Matt Stack played professional hockey with the Adirondack Ice Hawks of the United Hockey League, the “AA” affiliate of the Phoenix Coyotes. He was a two-sport captain in hockey and lacrosse at New England College and helped lead the Pilgrims to three championships in eight seasons, with two finals defeats. In 2015 he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at New England College. Matt helped found BlueStreak Sport Training and his passion lies in development of the complete hockey player, on and off the ice. Matt is USA Hockey Level 4 certified and currently 14 of his students have been drafted into the NHL and he has helped coach and train numerous prep school, Division I/3, professional and Olympic athletes. Matt is the Sr. Membership and Rinks Advisor at Chelsea Piers CT and resides in Darien with his wife Tanya, and two beautiful children, Bryce and Avery.
Brian Williams is a Darien native who played youth hockey at the DYHA before going on to play for and captain the Darien High School Blue Wave. Brian returned to the DYHA in 2003 to coach with his older brother, Kevin. The Williams brothers have coached all levels at DYHA - A, A1, and B – and have spent the last 10 years as Bantam A coaches. They have won the PeeWee CHC Tier 3 Championship in 2011 and were finalists in the Tier 3 New England Sectionals the same year and, most recently, were finalists in the 2017-18 Bantam CHC Tier 3 tourney and participated in the Tier 3 New England Sectionals. Brian is a USA Hockey Level 4 certified coach.
Kevin Williams has coached in the DYHA since 1995 at a variety of different levels from learn to skate through prep school. Since 2003, Kevin has coached with his brother Brian having won or been finalists at the PeeWee+ and Bantam CHC Tier 3 tourneys multiple times as well as made appearances at the New England Tier 3 Sectionals. Kevin grew up playing in the DYHA, at Brunswick, the Kent School and Darien High School. He currently lives in Darien with his two sons who both play in the DYHA. Kevin is a USA Hockey Level 4 certified coach.
Announcing the addition of CT Ice Cat Coaches Moe Tarrant, John Ludwig, Mark Fitzgerald, Brendan Garvey, Tony Delcarmine, James Duval and Dave Graichen for the upcoming 2018/2019 season
Moe Tarrant will be the CT Ice Cats Director of Skill Development and an assistant coach in our U14 age group. A USA Hockey Master Level Coach and the current Greenwich Academy Head Hockey Coach, Coach Moe brings the Ice Cats 30 years of coaching experience. In addition to Greenwich Academy, Moe has coached at the Hotchkiss School and founded the Mid Fairfield Stars, where he won two National Championships. We are excited for the Ice Cats to have such a wonderful resource in Coach Moe. As our girls will soon come to recognize, Coach Moe will share his knowledge of and passion for the game to not only help develop better hockey players, but players who are fulfilled in their experience with the Ice Cats and the relationships they develop while playing.
John Ludwig will coach in our U14 age group. John brings to the Ice Cats 25 years of experience in coaching girls hockey with multiple appearances in the Regional and National Tournaments. Coach “Luddy” currently works with Coach Moe as an assistant coach for the Greenwich Academy Varsity Hockey Team. In addition to a long history of developing successful hockey Coach Luddy brings to the Ice Cats the goal of improving our girls as players and people.
Mark Fitzgerald will also coach in our U14 age group. Coach Fitz grew up in Ridgefield an played through high school and has been coaching hockey since 1991. He holds his Level 4 Coaching Certification and has coached alongside Moe and Luddy for years as an assistant and head coach and taking his girls teams to regional and national tournaments. Not only has Coach Fitz been successful in developing girls who have gone on to play at the Division I and Division III levels, he had five of his own kids playing mite hockey and both of his daughters went on to play in college. Coach Fitz also has the goal of ensuring the girls have fun, learn the game of hockey, and realize the many life lessons that go along with competitive sports.
Brendan Garvey will be an assistant coach in our U14 age group. Brendan was a 4 year letter winner at Wesleyan University (ECAC Division II) from 1988-1992 and captained the team in his final two years there. Brendan went on to play minor league hockey in the CHL for the Oklahoma City Blazers and has over 20 years of coaching experience most recently with the NYC Cyclones and the Central Park Lady Hawks. Brendan co-founded and ran an intensive youth skating skill development program in Tuckahoe NY during the 2016/2017 season and continues to develop players of all ages and abilities out of that rink.
Tony Delcarmine will coach in our U12 age group. Tony grew up in Stamford, went to Choate and played and captained 3 Varsity Sports- Soccer, Hockey and Baseball. Tony played 4 years of Varity Hockey at Dartmouth where he was the captain his senior year. After graduating from Dartmouth, Tony played professionally in France for 3 years (Paris and Cherbourg). He is a USA Hockey Level 3 Coach and has coached at Mid Fairfield.
James Duval will coach in our U10 age group. A former standout forward at Brown University from 1996-2000, James went on to play in the minor leagues in the US and Europe after graduating. He is a former Harvard Varsity and Taft Woman’s Varsity Assistant Coach. James has coached at the US National Team Level as a U15 Development Camp Coach and is the current head coach at Brunswick Middle School.
David Graichen will work with and develop the Ice Cats goalies. Dave was a standout goaltender at University of Wisconsin-Superior where he played in 4 Frozen Four Tournaments. A three time All-American, Dave was also elected into his alma mater's hall of fame. We are thrilled to have Dave on staff to work with our goaltenders on a regular basis.
